Cats are masters at hiding illness. By the time a cat shows obvious signs of being unwell, they have often been sick for some time. Knowing the subtle warning signs that something is wrong can lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes.

1. Changes in Litter Box Habits

Straining to urinate, urinating outside the litter box, or producing very little urine are serious warning signs in cats โ€” especially male cats. Urinary blockage is a life-threatening emergency that can be fatal within 24-48 hours without treatment.

2. Not Eating for More Than 24 Hours

Unlike dogs, cats cannot go without food for extended periods without serious health consequences. Feline hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) can develop within 48-72 hours of not eating, particularly in overweight cats.

3. Hiding More Than Usual

Cats naturally hide when they feel vulnerable or unwell. If your cat is spending significantly more time hiding in unusual places, this is a behavioral signal worth investigating.

4. Changes in Breathing

Cats should breathe silently and effortlessly. Any audible breathing, open-mouth breathing, or rapid breathing at rest is an emergency. Unlike dogs, cats do not pant normally โ€” panting in a cat is always a warning sign.
